Sean Penn’s film ‘Into the Wild‘, an adaptation of the acclaimed book by Jon Krakauer, debuted in New York yesterday. The real life story of Christopher McCandless’ journey after some 15 years following his death, and 10 following the book, has been made into a motion picture. Sean Penn wrote the screenplay and directed the great young actor Emile Hirsch with narrations written by McCandless’ sister, voiced and played by Jena Malone. The film follows the recently graduated 22 year old as he makes his way across the states with no money or identification with his heart set on Alaska. He touches many interesting characters along the way including a hippie woman played by Catherine Keener and a young 16 year old who falls for him played by Kristen Stewart. The cinematography is breathtaking, treating the wilderness as much as a charcter as the lead. It’s great to see a film that comes close to capturing the quality of the book.
